President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Officiates the Opening Ceremony of the Exhibits at the 8th ASEAN Science and Technology Week (uploaded on 21 July 2008) H.E. Secretary Estrella A. Alabastro, Ministry of Science and Technology of the Philippines officially opened the Opening Ceremony of the 8th ASEAN Science and Technology Week (ASTW) Exhibits held in Manila on 7 July 2008. The Exhibition, participated by ASEAN Member States, Dialogue Partners such as China, EU, India and Japan, as well as private sectors, were held from 7-8 July 2008. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was presence in the event as a Guest Speaker. She delivered a Keynote Speech, she believed that science and technology could do many things to put food on the table, to save lives and prevent calamities, to harness renewable and indigenous energy, to cure and prevent illnesses, and to create more high-quality jobs. She was aware that all the ASEAN has these same aspirations. She also expressed her thank all Member States for working together to achieve 'One Caring and Sharing' ASEAN community through the empowerment provided by Science and Technology. The Opening Ceremony of the Exhibit was also attended by S&T Ministers, S&T Officials and Ambassadors from ASEAN Member States and ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners. The Secretary General of ASEAN, H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, was also in attendance. The Ministers gathered in Manila on the occasion of the 5th Informal Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology (SCMIT). At the Opening Ceremony, President Arroyo presented ASEAN prestigious S&T Awards to two ASEAN scientists. Dr. Cesar A. Saloma of the Philippines was the ASEAN Outstanding Scientists and Technologist awardee in recognition of his outstanding and significant contributions in photonics and signal processing that were acoomplised with colleagues and students at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Dilliman. Dr. Ng Fong Poh Lisa of Singapore was the recipient of the ASEAN Young Scientist and Technology Award in recognition for her research and development of Asia’s infectious diseases, especially emerging and re-emerging diseases. Her research group has been credited with developing reliable sensitive diagnostic tests for the SARS-CoV and Avian Influensa H5N1 virus.
