Workshop on Renewable Energy, New Delhi (uploaded on 22 December 2006)

The Workshop on Renewable Energy was held in New Delhi, India on 18-19 December 2006. The Workshop aims to identify joint activities to be implemented in the future in the form of trainings and workshops; R&D; and demonstration in renewable energy and to also establish institutional linkages between and among institutions in ASEAN including the ACE and India for cooperation on R&D in renewable energy.

The Workshop was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The status of the development and utilization of renewable energy (RE) in the AMCs was presented in the two-day Workshop. Indian experts from relevant institutions under the MNRE including those from the private sector shared their experiences and lessons learned in their effort to increase the contribution of RE in the total energy consumption of the country. It was noted that India is currently among the world leaders in the deployment of technologies and related equipment in harnessing wind and solar (i.e., solar thermal and solar photovoltaic) energy. India has also gained expertise and developed technologies in utilizing energy from biomass; biofuels; small/mini hydropower; and fuel cells.

The ASEAN Secretariat and ACE brought up the possible areas of cooperation in RE energy with India in biofuel utilization. The AMCs will focus their efforts in identifying and propagating suitable non-edible oil-bearing seeds, and the corresponding oil extraction processes. Continuing efforts to utilize solar, hydro, wind, biomass and other renewable energy sources shall also be undertaken. Particular emphasis was made in joint Research and Development (R &D) activities that may result in potentially commerciable products and services. Other areas of cooperation highlighted included continuing capacity building, technology transfer, networking and information sharing.

India expressed its interest to cooperate with the AMCs in the following:
a. Explore collaborations with AMCs in the field of Wind and Solar Energy. Possible activities cited include resource mapping and assessment, and training sessions;
b. Joint cooperation in other RE resources such as biomass (Urban and Municipal Solid Waste);
c. Exchange of professionals and experts in RE between ASEAN and India;
India will come up with a concept paper that would provide details on follow-up activities to the workshop.

India invited the AMCs to attend the International Training Workshop in Renewable Energy which it will host on 5-16 February 2007. Each AMC may send 1 senior level participant to the training workshop. ASEAN is requested to bear the international roundtrip airfare while India will provide support for the local cost of the participants.
