Around 100 scientists from ASEAN countries, Pakistan, France, Germany, UK and US materials scientists gathered in Islamabad on 15-16 December 2008 during the holding of the ASEAN-Pakistan Conference on Materials Science. The Conference, supported by the ASEAN-Pakistan Cooperation Fund, was hosted by the National University of S&T (NUST), Pakistan. It aimed to provide a venue for scientists to share their works and experiences in the applications of novel technologies in the fields of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, and surface engineering, polymer engineering and composites technologies.

The Opening Ceremony of the Workshop was officiated by Mr. Inam-Ul-Haq, former Foreign Minister of Pakistan. Around 43 high quality papers were presented at the Workshop. To further disseminate the outcomes of the research works, selected papers presented at the Workshop will be published in the NUST Journal of Engineering Science. The launching of the Journal was done during the Workshop official dinner on 15 December 2008

The Workshop has provided a good platform for ASEAN and Pakistan scientists to pursue joint R&D undertakings, exchange of visits, seminars and workshop in various fields of advanced materials. ASEAN and Pakistan also agreed to recommend to relevant authorities in ASEAN and Pakistan that the 2nd Conference will be held in an ASEAN country in 2010.

The Workshop received a good coverage from the local media. The Pakistani TV (PTV) invited the Workshop organizer and some foreign Workshop participants including Dr. Donald Tambunan of the ASEAN Secretariat to come to its studio for a session which was aired on PTV in the evening of 16 December 2008.
