The ASEAN S&T Ministers will hold their informal meeting in Manila on 7-8 July 2008. The informal meeting, to be held for the fifth time, will be hosted by Dr. Esterella Alabastro, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines. The Ministers will exchange views on various issues relating to the current challenges faced by the region such as climate change, energy and food shortage. It is expected that the Ministers will issue directives on how S&T interventions could help find ways to minimise their adverse social, environmental and economic impacts, and at the same time improve the quality of life of ASEAN peoples.

SEACOOP Seminar, Brussels, 1 April 2008 (uploaded on 10 April 2008)

A joint project between Europe and South East Asia entitled Further Developing Strategic R&D cooperation with South East Asia on ICT (SEACOOP) is currently being implemented with support from the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission (EC). ASEAN continues the discussion to network S&T centers of excellence in the region (uploaded on 19 February 2008)

As a follow up to the first meeting held in January 2007, the ASEAN Sub-Committee on S&T Infrastructure and Resources Development (SCIRD) convened the second meeting in Kuala Lumpur on 15-16 February 2008 to discuss ways to realize the establishment of the Network of S&T centers of excellence (COEs) in the region. Hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) of Malaysia, representatives of COEs and S&T Officials from ASEAN Member States put together some thoughts at the second meeting to draft the vision, mission and strategies of the network. Among the key strategies identified include close partnerships with private sector and similar networks within and outside ASEAN aiming to enhance capabilities of COEs to undertake research and technology development and commercialization of technologies. The Network will also facilitate sharing resources such as research facilities and experts among COEs.

ASEAN and EU embark on a new initiative to facilitate the bi-regional EU-ASEAN science and technology dialogue (uploaded on 30 January 2008)

The Nuremberg Declaration on an EU-ASEAN Enhanced Partnership signed in April 2007 recognises the importance of Southeast Asia as a region and calls for a deepening of the level of cooperation, including S&T, between the EU and ASEAN. ASEAN Cooperation in Meteorology and Geophysics to be Expanded to Include Tropical Cyclone (uploaded on 22 July 2007)

Tropical cyclone, known as typhoon which hits tropical areas, has been recognised as one of the major causes of natural disaster in the region. Future cooperation activities in this field will focus on the technical aspects pertaining to its monitoring and efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts.
